Windows networking unable to see other till unit

Problem:

Use has been able to share information between units without any problem for some time. Each unit can see itself and all of its shared directories in its network neighbourhood, but the other units cannot.

Solution:

This is a complaint to do with the systems firewall settings. If you ask if someone has recently made changes to the machines firewall settings, hopefully they will confirm this is the case.

The problem is caused when a machine has a fixed ip address (sometimes this is not the case), but the internet connection sharing is on and the firewall is on.

In the network control panel (Select Start Menu, then Control Panel, then Network), you need to right click on the network connection which is causing trouble and select properties.

If you then click on the 'Advanced' tab, you may be able to see 'Share my internet connection'. If this is ticked, and the firewall is on, then ANY machine connecting to this machine using the network connection which you are editing is treated as if they are coming from the internet by the firewall. You will need to make a choice as follows:-

Does this machine need to share its internet connection using this network
No - Turn Internet Connection Sharing off, all should be fine
YES- Has the machine got another network connection
NO - Hit 'Settings' then 'Advanced' Tab, then the 'Network Connection Settings' 'settings' button. You will need to tick ' File & Folder Sharing'. PLEASE NOTE THIS CARRIES ITS OWN SET OF RISKS AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED. If you are going to go down this line, ensure your connection requires a password, and that 'Guest' access is off.
YES- Disable Internet connection sharing on this connection, and share it on the other network connection. Ensure your 'Local' network connects using the method with the 'connection sharing turned on', and that the other connection has internet connection sharing turned off
