Problem:
Installing Metalwin for network use is not quite as straight forward as it sounds on the can.
To deploy a working network version that can be easily updated you will need to follow some steps.
Solution:
The Server
----------
Ideally you need to designate a CD drive to Metalwin, and leave the CD in it.
With this done, share the drive as something sensible eg 'Metals'
2nd you need to create a local path where the files can be saved & accessed from each machine. We use 'C:/Metalprog'. You need to share this directory AND give all the users the ability to write to it.
The Clients
-----------
If you are updating to a later release DO NOT REPEAT THIS STEP - See Updating
Navigate network neighborhood to your server and drag the shared CD Drive ('Metals') to the local My Computer area (The bit with Drive C; Floppy A; etc).
The system will ask you if you want to map the drive. Say Yes, tick reconnect at startup and assign a letter. We use 'Z'
Now repeat the process for the 'Metalprog' directory, We use 'Y' for this shared drives drive letter.
With this done Launch the setup program on each client located at Z:/Setup
Enter the required password, AND CHANGE THE Program Destination to Y:/Metalwin
Create the directory if prompted. Should only occur on the 1st installation
On the Next window select Network Application, and ensure the paths are all Y:/Metalwin...
Enter the 2nd password and complete the install.
You now have a working Metalwin on each machine
UPDATING
--------
This is the best bit, cause you only need to update 1 machine to update the lot.
Put the updated CD into your servers metalwin CD drive
Ensure ALL clients are out of Metalwin
Pick any one of the CLIENT machines.
and launch Z:/Setup
Enter the appropriate password
Set the install path to Y:/Metalwin
Select Network Application & ensure all these paths are also 'Y:/Metalwin/...'
Complete the installation.
Well done, all machines will now be running the latest version of Metalwin.
